of other Colonies. As the supervising Staff is a small

one in Hong Kong, though the Colony is an important one

and the Auditor is in Class I of the Service, I have not

proposed that the second man there should have the status

and emoluments appropriate to a Deputy Auditor.

I do,

however, consider that he should have the status and

emoluments appropriate to a Senior Assistant Auditor in

Class III and be an officer selected by promotion to that

post and not merely the person who happens to be the

senior of the three Assistant Auditors stationed in

that Colony. The increase in the maximum salaries of

the two Assistant Auditors Class IV) to £820 plus

Local Allowance of £50 (or $840) will bring their real

emoluments more into line with those of Assistant

Auditors in West Africa and so facilitate transfers.
